HOW THIS CHECKLIST WAS COMPILED

What is a checklist?  A checklist of birds is a list of all birds that have been reliable observed within a defined area.  It is not a list of birds thought to occur within an area.  To compile this list I used the observations of Adrian Larson a pioneer ornithologist who birded the Minnehaha area from 1906 to 1916 and published his findings in The Wilson Bulletin, the records of Gil Blankespoor and Herb Krause published in American Birds and Christmas Bird Counts including counts from the early 1900's.  Finally, I used my own records and searched fifty years of South Dakota Bird Notes.  Criteria must be used to substantiate records.  Today, I use the South Dakota Ornithologists’ Union’s Rare Bird Committees rulings to authenticate records.  Observations made prior to the formation of the SDOU Rare Bird Committee are harder to substantiate.  In general, if the record was made by a skilled observer and was used in subsequent publications of SDOU, I included it on the list.  Records that did not meet my criteria include Boreal Chickadee, King Rail, Rock Wren, Pygmy Nuthatch, Golden-crowned Sparrow and Little Gull.
