The 2005 Sioux Falls Christmas Bird Count
was held on December 17,
on a sunny day with a high temperature of 10 degrees F.  It was a day of high counts for the Sioux Falls CBC with the following species recording record high counts of individuals for the fifty-seven year history of the count: Canada Goose (5,035), Common Goldeneye (12), Bald Eagle (12), Red-tailed Hawk (38), Merlin (3), Wild Turkey (278), Rock Pigeon (2901) and American Goldfinch (255).  A record high of total individuals was tallied of (12,563) due largely to the high count of Canada Geese and Rock Pigeons.  For those concerned with the effects of the West Nile Virus the following information is presented for three species: a Blue Jays count of (64) which compares to an average count of (25) and maximum count of (75) in 1979; an American Crow count of (319) compared to an average count of (322) and a max Count of (1,362) in 1992, Black-capped Chickadee (112) which compares to an average count of (280) and a maximum count of (663) in 1961.  Thank you, to all participants who braved the cold to continue the tradition.

The annual Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count will be held Dec. 14 to Jan. 5 in locations throughout the US and other countries. The CBC is conducted on one specified day in each designated 15-mile diameter area. Its purpose is to document as many wild birds as can be seen from dawn until dusk on the specified day in over 1900 different areas around the world. During this time period, thousands of volunteers, including everyone from expert ornithologists to first time birders and feeder watchers, will search their backyards, neighborhoods, parks, rivers, lakes, forests and farms.

The data collected is used for environmental and scientific studies, and is available to anyone who is interested. Last year over 63 million birds were seen. You can access last year’s data on line, at www.audubon.org or www.birdsource.org/

In Sioux Falls, the search area is centered at Rice Street and Cliff Avenue. The date for the Sioux Falls event is December 18. The Sioux Falls Bird Club encourages anyone interested in wild birds to take part. You can go with the volunteers or take a count from your bird feeders in your yard. If you wish to help with the expenses for compiling and publication of the data, you can pay a $5 participation fee.

The success of the count is dependent on the number of volunteers. Sioux Falls CBC traditionally finds around 50 species, with totals in the thousands. Feeder watchers will watch from their homes, and other volunteers will meet at the Outdoor Campus by 7:30 on Saturday, Dec. 18. You can go out till noon or all day. Transportation will be provided. Volunteers meet back at the Outdoor campus at noon and at 5 PM. Feeder watchers may send their results in.

For a questionnaire/application, contact Robb Schenck at 422 N. Linwood Ct, SF SD 57103 (605)-274- 6554

Results and photos can be found after the event at the SFBC web site at www.leifericson.org/sfbc For more information on the state count, type in SDOU on your search engine to access the South Dakota Ornithological Union WebPages.
