  • Chief Drifting Goose
  • King Kukalayla

An example of the legends

The legend of the great Chief Drifting Goose incorporates history with fiction. The story, told at the conclusion of the overnight campfire program, tells of the Great Yanktonais leader (1821-1909) meeting Captain Dan Butterfield, of the 7th Cavalry, at an outpost along the James River in the late 1860s, where the Captain introduced the Chief to the bugle and the beautiful taps that the Captain's uncle had invented.
